GAIN - the charity getting more young women into investment management

GAIN is a charity that aims to get more young women interested in, and applying for, entry level investment management roles.

Why do they do this? Well, there is a huge gender gap in the sector. For example, a 2021 report by Morningstar found that there are more funds run by men called "Dave" then there are female run funds (68 funds are run by men called Dave or David, with just 45 female managers in the UK). A 2021 survey by Level 20 found that just ‘10% of senior investment roles in the UK are held by women’.

This is where GAIN comes in, informing young women with resources from webinars to insight programmes, newsletters to mentorship, with the aim of breaking down gender barriers in the industry and getting more young women excited about a role in investment management and the career it offers.

Might GAIN be just the people to help you achieve your career goals? If you’re interested in learning more about investment management, here are some of the ways GAIN can help you:

Events

GAIN offers school talks for sixth formers and college students, partnering with schools across the UK. They also run their own stand-alone events, a mixture of panel sessions and interactive workshops that dive into an array of subtopics within the industry ranging from ‘What is Impact Investing?’ through to ‘A Day in the life of an Investment Analyst’ and beyond. All their events are free.

Student Ambassadors

GAIN collaborates with universities to offer ambassador programmes to female students, who can organise a GAIN event each term with GAIN’s support, as well as promoting GAIN on campus throughout the year, and in return are partnered with an industry mentor to help guide their career aspirations.

Internships

GAIN’s flagship summer intern programme supports students in realising their career ambitions in the investment industry, offering an internship place alongside a comprehensive training programme and allocation to a GAIN mentor for additional support. Applications for the 2023 programme are open until October 23rd 2022. Insight Programme

The GAIN Investment Insight Programme is a great opportunity for first and second year undergraduate students. The 12-week programme includes weekly seminars, virtual portfolio building, mentoring and insight days with different firms during the Easter break.

Resources

With hundreds of events under their belt, GAIN have a huge library of investment management resources on their website – from blogs, to webinars to day-in-the-life vlogs.
